Batata Harra are the equivalent of the Spanish Patatas Bravas. They are delicious sautéed potatoes and spiced in the Lebanese style. It is an essential part of the Lebanese mezze and can be served with a delicious hummus, a Lebanese tabbouleh or simply with a little bit of toum.

Peel and wash the potatoes

Preheat your oven to 250 degrees (gas mark 8/9).
Peel, wash and dry the potatoes. Cut them into small, evenly sized cubes and place them in a bowl. Sprinkle your potato cubes with olive oil, salt and mix well.

Cooking Batata Harra

Arrange your oiled and salted potato cubes in an ovenproof dish or baking sheet. Cover your potatoes with parchment paper, making sure that no potatoes overlap. Make sure your potatoes are well spread out in a single layer. Put them in the oven for 30 to 35 minutes at 250°C. Make sure the surface is browning well. You won't need to turn them during cooking.

You can also sauté them in a pan over high heat.

Preparation of Lebanese spices

While the cooking is finished, prepare the spices. In a bowl, mix your batata harra spices: cumin, paprika, cayenne pepper, black pepper and coriander powder. In a small pan, heat a tablespoon of oil and fry the minced garlic for about 1 minute. Remove the pan from the heat and add your harra batata spice mixture. Stir well for a minute to bring out the flavors.
Peel and mince your garlic cloves. Wash, dry and chop the chives
Once your batata harra are golden brown, take them out of the oven.

Mix batata harra with the spices

Place your oven roasted potatoes in a large serving dish and sprinkle with the spice mixture. Mix well until all the potatoes are well coated.

Your Lebanese batata harra are ready!

Add a nice drizzle of lemon juice and add salt if needed. Serve your batata harra hot with homemade hummus and Lebanese tabbouleh.
